Monthly Mix: December 2016

The Rolling Stones turn Blue & Lonesome

     December has brought lots of snow, tons of presents, and a bunch of new music. Before the year comes to an end, there is still one more sleigh-full of fresh tunes to be delivered.
     English rockers The Rolling Stones have released a cover album in the form of Blue & Lonesome [December 2nd, via Polydor]. The twelve cover songs span from Willie Dixon to Howlin' Wolf. On the Eddie Taylor track "Ride 'Em On Down", the band finds itself in its sweet spot and features vintage Keith Richards guitar work. The rest of the album is top notch classic rock music.
     The cold of the winter has settled in and it's refreshing to know the iPod is restocked with fresh beats. The December Playlist makes the perfect soundtrack for opening the last presents under the tree.

Monthly Mix: November 2016

A Tribe Called Quest say Thank You 4 Your Service

     November has come and gone, and now it's time to string up the Christmas lights and get ready for the winter. Thanksgiving brought a feast like always, and also a piping hot serving of new music.
     New York hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest are back with their new album We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service. Q-Tip, Jarobi White, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and the late Phife Dawg dropped one last album and it does not disappoint. All sixteen tracks have a vintage Tribe sound and feature numerous guests such as Kanye West and Jack White. On the single "We The People...." Q-Tip reminds all of us that "you must go." The rest of the album is a smooth fusion of jazz and hip-hop. As of now, there are no tour dates scheduled in support of the album.
     The chilly nights of the winter are upon us and it's always refreshing to know the iPod is reloaded with fresh tracks. The November Playlist makes a good soundtrack while enjoying the last of the turkey leftovers.

Monthly Mix: October 2016

Phish sets sail on Big Boat
   
     October has come and gone and the trick-or-treaters are retired until next year. Halloween delivered a healthy dose of candy, and a tombstone-sized helping of new music.
     Vermont jam-rockers Phish are riding high from the release of their new album Big Boat [October 7, via JEMP]. The thirteen tracks weave in and out of classic rock sound, heartfelt ballads, and funk. On the breezy track "Blaze On", frontman Trey Anastasio reminds us to put our nice shades on and enjoy life, while the band lays down a calypso-rock groove. Check them out live on their New Year's Run in New York City at Madison Garden and in Mexico early next year.
     The fall is officially here and it's good to have a fresh batch of new tunes for the brisk nights. The October Playlist makes a good companion with the last Twix in the candy jar.

Monthly Mix: September 2016

Bon Iver crunches the numbers on 22, A Million

     The signs of the fall have began to surface in the form of red and orange leaves, and brisk evening breezes. Signs of new music have also surfaced, and the first batch of the season does not disappoint.
     Wisconsin's Bon Iver is creating a buzz with their latest album 22, A Million [September 30, via Jagjaguwar]. Frontman Justin Vernon wrote all ten tracks on the album, most of which contain various looped recording techniques. On the eerie track "10 Death/Breast" Vernon has a message as he proclaims 'love, don't fight it'. Check them out on tour as they roll through Germany, the U.S., France, and the U.K.
     Summer is officially behind us and hooded-sweatshirt weather is upon us. As we shift into fall, it's always good to know the iPod is stacked with fresh cuts. The September Playlist makes a good soundtrack for the first bonfire of the season.

Monthly Mix: August 2016

Glass Animals explain How To Be A Human Being


     Even though the summer is coming to an end, the good times keep rolling on. Summer brought lots of sunshine, endless parties, and of course a big serving of new music.
     English indie-rockers Glass Animals are making some waves with their latest album How To Be A Human Being [August 26th, via Caroline Records]. The eleven tracks maintain a quirky uptempo beat that will keep the interest of all the late night guests. On the slinky "Youth", the band finds itself at its best with their familiar tribal rock sound. Check them out this fall as their tour slides through Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and Germany.
     As we look back at all the fun adventures of the summer and get ready for the brisk nights of autumn, it's always nice to know the mp3 is reloaded with fresh tunes. The August Playlist makes a good soundtrack for the last pool party of the season.

Monthly Mix: July 2016

Schoolboy Q gives a Blank Face
     
     The summer is off to a hot start and the beaches and pools have been radiating with positive vibes.  July came and went, but in its path it left a stockpile of fresh new music.
     California's Schoolboy Q is back making some noise with his latest release Blank Face LP [July 8, via Top Dawg Entertainment]. The seventeen tracks highlight the rapper's aggressive and impressive delivery, and also feature numerous guests, including Kanye West and E-40. On the relaxing cut "Black Thoughts (Pt. 3)", he bobs and weaves over a smooth stoner groove. Check out his tour as it swings through the United States, with a stop in Toronto, and a big slot at Austin City Limits.
     As we get deeper into the summer, it's nice to know the mp3 players are re-charged with a new mix of tunes. The July Playlist makes a good soundtrack for lounging by the pool or jogging down the beach.

Monthly Mix: June 2016

Red Hot Chili Peppers make The Getaway

     
     Summer is finally here and the beach parties have officially started. Along with all the sunshine, June also brought a fresh batch of hot tunes.
     California's Red Hot Chili Peppers are back making a buzz with their first album in five years, The Getaway [June 17, via Warner Bros.]. The thirteen tracks have a vintage Peppers' sound, with frontman Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea putting their stamp on each song. For the title cut "The Getaway", Kiedis slows things down a bit over a rolling bassline. Check them out on tour as they swing through Russia, Belgium, Japan, the U.K., Canada, and the U.S. with big stops at Fuji Rock Festival and Lollapalooza.
     It's a good feeling to know the iPod is reloaded with new summer beats. The June Playlist blends in a healthy dose of alternative and indie rock and makes the perfect soundtrack while firing up the grill.

Monthly Mix: May 2016

Radiohead dives into A Moon Shaped Pool


     Spring is in full swing and the birds and wildlife have come alive. May brought a heavy dose of sunshine and also a dazzling array of new music.
     English mega-rockers Radiohead are back in the fold with their latest album A Moon Shaped Pool [May 8, via XL]. The album is in the same sonic vein as some of its recent predecessors, focusing on frontman Thom Yorke's haunting voice and eerie synths. On the single "Burn The Witch", the band builds up a harmonious string symphony as Yorke warns not to shoot the messenger. Check them out on tour as they swing through the UK and the United States with big stops at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, and Austin City Limits.
     It's good to know that the summer is right around the corner and the grills will be fired up soon. The May Playlist serves as the perfect soundtrack for those sunny afternoon barb-b-ques.

Monthly Mix: April 2016

Bear Hands proclaim You'll Pay For This


     The April showers have come and gone, and they left behind a bucket full of fresh new music. Spring is here and festival season is right around the corner.
     New York's Bear Hands are riding high on the waves of their latest release You'll Pay For This [April 15, via Spensive Sounds]. Frontman Dylan Rau says "the record varies, there's some folky stuff and some electro stuff." There's also a heavy dose of guitar-driven rock. On the track "Marathon Man" the band showcases their rock side and features some dance-worthy grooves. The whole album delivers without a disappointment. Check them out as their tour spins through the U.S. with fun stops at the KROQ Weenie Roast and Hangout Music Festival.
     As we roll into the spring, it's refreshing to know the iPod is restocked. The April Playlist mixes in a nice blend of indie and alternative rock. It makes the perfect soundtrack for the first bike ride of the season.

Monthly Mix: March 2016

White Denim hardens up with Stiff


     March came in like a lion, and went out like a lamb. Or something like that. The snowy season is finally over and the spring is upon us. The clouds may be bringing rain, but the music world is bringing some sunny new gems.
     Texas psych-rockers White Denim are generating a buzz with their latest album Stiff [March 25, via Downtown Records]. The record is 9 tracks and bounces around from one playful beat to another. Frontman James Petralli said the band wanted to "go back to basics" and it rings true on the album. On the track "Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah)", the band shows off more of a soulful side and it could pass as a funky R&B song. The whole album is a pleasant listen. Check them out on tour as they weave through the United States with big festival gigs at Forecastle and LOCKN'.
     It's good to know the winter is finally behind us and the spring is here. The March Playlist is filled with fresh tunes and makes the perfect soundtrack for tuning up the bike, cleaning off the golf clubs, or strolling through the park.

Monthly Mix: February 2016

The 1975 wake from their Sleep


     The music world has been off to a fast start so far this year. The trend continues into February with a blizzard-sized heap of fresh new tunes.
     British alt-rockers The 1975 are generating some noise with their latest album i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it [February 26, via Dirty Hit]. The quirky title is fitting for the record, which bops around in different directions such as pop, funk, and even chillwave. They somehow manage to pull off all those sounds and the result is a surprisingly good listen. On the single "The Sound", frontman Matt Healy summons the help of a gospel-like choir to take part in the singing duties. Look for them as their tour rolls through the UK and the United States, and includes a big slot at Coachella.
     As the last remaining snow banks begin to melt away, it's refreshing to know that the iPod is reloaded and spring is just around the corner.

David Bowie says farewell with Blackstar


     The new year is here and it's good to have some fresh cuts in the iPod as we enjoy the winter wonderland.
     The music world lost a great one in David Bowie. His last album Blackstar [January 8th, via ISO] is one that resonates with fans of all ages. The track "Lazarus" is a swan song of sorts, and has traces of his career layered in the sounds. He will be missed.
