Monthly Mix: The Playlist, December 2012

Alt-J offers up "Something Good"

Well, friends, on the last day of 2012 comes the last Playlist of the year. Not only that, it is also the final post under the title "Feerock's World." Don't worry music fans, this site will be back next year under a different name and design with the same concept in mind. It will still have the same goal to recap some of the month's best music and to give insight on a few bands and their new albums.
December handed out plenty of gifts, not to mention a bunch of stocking stuffers in the form of toasty mp3s. British indie quartet Alt-J kicks things off with "Something Good", a slow moving eerie cut off of their 2012 release An Awesome Wave. Another featured song comes from Cincinnati indie rockers Walk The Moon. The band handed us "Tightrope" as the second single and serves as a peppy dance number to get the blood flowing on these cold nights. Scottish indie-folkers Frightened Rabbit deliver the last featured cut of the month in the form of the somber, yet uplifting "Dead Now" which will be on their new 2013 record Pedestrian Verse.
Thanks for reading, folks, it truly was a great year of music like usual. Have a good New Year's Eve and I hope to see you up around the bend.

Best Albums of 2012

It's hard to believe another year is almost in the books. The feeling is bittersweet as we get to look back on the great year it was and we get to anticipate what lies ahead up the path. Seems like just yesterday the first fresh batch of albums came in and were absorbed into the eardrums. The return of alternative rockstars from the past and a whole bunch of indie dance tracks set the pace for what turned out to be another successful year for alt-nation.
As the year ends, and the heap of music has piled up, it's nice to take a look back at a few of the records that stood out a cut above the rest. With that being said, here are some of the best albums from 2012:

Best Albums of 2012

20. Purity Ring Shrines

19. Animal Collective Centipede Hz

18. Muse - The 2nd Law

17. Beach House - Bloom

16. Grizzly Bear - Shields

15. Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls

14. Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten

13. Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory

12. Minus the Bear - Infinity Overhead

11. Passion Pit - Gossamer

10. Dinosaur Jr. - I Bet On Sky

9. Japandroids - Celebration Rock

8. The Shins - Port Of Morrow

7. Yeasayer - Fragrant World

6. Tame Impala - Lonerism

5. moe. - What Happened To The La Las

New York jam-rockers moe. have the uncanny ability of making quality studio albums, something that is not the norm for the genre. On their most recent effort What Happened to the La Las the group utilized an outside producer in John Travis (Kid Rock, Social Distortion) and joined up with Sugar Hill Records. Heavy on guitar-shredding and catchy hooks, The La Las is one of this year's most pleasant surprises.

4. The Smashing Pumpkins - Oceania

Of all the 90's alternative rockstars that made returns in 2012, only Billy Corgan managed to break through the fold with a solid album. Although they dawn a completely new line-up except for Corgan, Oceania sounds like vintage Pumpkins, in both the production and the song writing. Their classic sound remains true. Welcome back.

3. Brothertiger - Golden Years

Chillwave guru John Jagos aka Brothertiger dropped perhaps the most dance friendly album of the year. Golden Years is Jagos's first major release and it sure does deliver the goods. Blending easy-breezy summertime vocals with blazing hot synths, this album was meant to be played in the heat of the summer. This is definitely not the last we've heard from Brothertiger, and that's a good thing.

2. Jack White - Blunderbuss

It's safe to say Jack White was on a mission in 2012 to prove once again that he should be at the top of the list of the world's baddest musicians. He states his case very well with Blunderbuss, his first solo studio album. This record is filled with a little of everything including gritty guitar, poppy keys, and plenty of White's swagger sprinkled in. Mission accomplished, Jack.

1. Two Door Cinema Club - Beacon

Northern Ireland indie-rockers Two Door Cinema Club made a surge in 2012 stretching to the banks of California and many places in between. This was in part due to Beacon, an impressive collection of arena-sounding, guitar-drenched, dance-worthy rock songs. Frontman Alex Trimble claims this album "Is much more intimate" than their last. That may be true, but it's also more explosive, which is a good thing for music fans.

There you have it folks, the Best Albums of 2012.

Stay tuned for the December 2012 Playlist as well as some site changes!

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, November 2012

Soundgarden unleashes King Animal

It's safe to say November brought us plenty to be thankful for. Along with all the turkey & mashed potatoes came a feast of great music. This month followed the yearly trend of alternative rock superstars making a triumphant return into the mainstream. As the music world continues to change, it is nice to hear familiar voices from the past hungry to begin their next chapter.
Back with a bang, Seattle grunge-rockers Soundgarden have surged back to the forefront of alternative radio with their first release in 16 years King Animal. According to band leader Chris Cornell, "The album is a story. It has a lot of twists and turns." One of those stories is the heavy-hitting "Non-State Actor" which displays the band's trademark ferocious guitar and Cornell's unmistakable vocals, reminiscent of something out of the 90's. Check them out as their album-supporting tour kicks off in January with a trip up the east coast.
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno states he was trying to create an album in the same vein as their epic 2000 release White Pony. On the band's newest offering, Koy No Yokan, they get close but not quite all the way. The Sacramento alternative-metal outfit gave us "Tempest" as a formidable single, which features plenty of tension and release, not to mention a handful of Moreno's screams. Their tour makes a trek through the UK in February.
Changing up the pace a bit, Canadian electronic band Crystal Castles dropped their newest record III on November 12th. Their sound has been described as a mix of icy synth-pop and white hot noise. This would be a fairly accurate description for "Affection" which features frontwoman Alice Glass's soft vocals over a glitchy backdrop.
As we prepare for the snow and the holiday season, this month's Playlist provides a quality mix of tracks to help reminisce on the past, and to look forward to what's in store around the bend. November served up a shmorgus board of fat mp3s, which left us with no room for dessert.

November 2012 Playlist

1. Toro Y Moi - So Many Details ft. Hodgy Beats

2. Atoms For Peace - What The Eyeballs Did

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, October 2012

Muse returns with The 2nd Law

While the ghosts and ghouls were out doing their share of haunting this October, they didn't seem to scare away the fresh mp3s. This month's musical offerings were handed out like candy, which included some well placed tricks and of course a plethora of treats.
English space-rockers Muse are making waves with their new album The 2nd Law, which dropped on the first of the month. While not as explosive as their previous offerings, there are some moments where the band flexes their prog muscles. On "Panic Station", the band follows the lead of a crunchy bassline and finds them right at home in their comfort zone, blending big rock with pop.
If the projections are accurate, London's Mumford & Sons are set to break all sorts of records with their latest album Babel. The indie-folkers handed us "I Will Wait" as the lead single and it has been picking up speed on just about every radio outlet imaginable. Their upcoming tour has them bunkered down across the pond, playing to sold out crowds on a nightly basis.
Guitar virtuoso and Phish frontman Trey Anastasio is back in action with a new release of his own entitled Traveler. This isn't the first time the jamband rocker has tried his name in a solo record, this time he delves into the world of indie-rock summoning the likes of The National and Mates of State as his bandmates. Utilizing his ability to experiment, the cut "Scabbard" seems to be meandering all over the place yet manages to stay in the groove all at once, something that sounds all too natural.
As the days get shorter, and the nights get colder, it is reassuring to know that quality music is still being warmed up on the burner. October's mix features a solid fusion of twisted synths and electric guitar, a blend that is certainly fitting for the cold nights ahead.

October 2012 Playlist

1. The Burning of Rome - Ballad Of An Onion Sprout

2. Pinback - Proceed To Memory

3. Muse - Panic Station

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, September 2012

It's always refreshing to feel the crisp breezes and to admire autumn's multi-colored backdrop. September sets the perfect stage for looking back on the wild summer
memories, but also for looking forward to what lies ahead in the fall. This month brought us a textured soundscape that includes familiar arena sounds along with a few chillwave beats to keep it fresh on those brisk nights.
California's pop-punk heroes Green Day have launched themselves back into action on the college radio waves with the arrival of their first album in three years Uno! The first of what will eventually be a 3-part trilogy, this one offers up a heavy dose of pop. On "Kill The DJ", the band takes a trip into dance-pop territory receiving mixed results. They will hit Voodoo Festival followed by a west coast run later this season.
One of the year's most talked about releases comes from London's The xx. The indie trio delivered Coexist which features a softer, lighter sound and blends in perfectly to our current surroundings. The second single "Chained" is a feathery cut about lovers drifting apart, and exhibits a stumbling beat until it finds its rhythm towards the end. The band will weave through Canada, the U.S., and Europe in support of the new album.
Fresh off the heels of Battle Born, alternative rock outfit The Killers are making some noise of their own. The arena-rockers have offered up "Runaways", which finds frontman Brandon Flowers telling a story of wanting someone not to leave them. Check them out as their tour makes stops at some bigtime venues, including Madison Square Garden and Air Canada Centre.
Autumn is one of the best times of the year, and also hands out some of the best music. This time was no different as the colorful array of sounds made for smooth accompaniment alongside the picturesque tree lines. As we officially say goodbye to the summer, we gladly throw on our jackets and head out into the cool air to enjoy the fresh scenery, not to mention the crisp music.

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, August 2012

August for some reason always seems like the unofficial end of summer. While the sun may have cooled off, the fresh tunes continued to stay blazing. In addition to awesome music, this month's Playlist also includes some of the year's most psychedelic and, for lack of a better word, bizarre videos.
According to Two Door Cinema Club frontman Alex Trimble, their new album Beacon is "much more intimate, but much bigger" than the band's first release two years ago. For fans of the band, that almost sounds impossible. They delivered their new single "Sleep Alone" earlier this month, a track equipped with an action packed video. A string of European dates followed by a trip to the U.S. is how these Northern Irelanders will spend the upcoming weeks.
Australian psych-rockers Tame Impala are also set to unveil their sophomore record in the near future. The band's Lonerism will be available to the public October 5th and features the trippy "Elephant" as its first offering. If the rest of the album sounds as good as this, we are in for a treat. Check them out as their November tour plows through some of the States' hot spots.
The last offering of the month comes from the always experimental Animal Collective. The Baltimore group is back in action with Centipede Hz, one of the year's most anticipated releases. Often described as "music from outer space", the Collective boys did nothing on their new album to dispute that reputation. "Today's Supernatural" is the lead single and features an absurdly freakish video, which shouldn't come to anyone's surprise.
As the last tunes of the summer come in, it's nice to absorb the sunny sounds while there still is a chance. The lazy afternoons are almost over as the calendar prepares itself for cooler breezes. August's Playlist features a solid blend of cuts that falls somewhere in between, which is a good place to be right now.

August 2012 Playlist

1. Purity Ring - Amenamy

2. The Lumineers - Ho Hey

3. Two Door Cinema Club - Sleep Alone

4. Bloc Party - Octopus

5. Cherub - Doses and Mimosas

6. Tame Impala - Elephant

7. Major Lazer - Get Free (ft. Amber Coffman)

8. Black Moth Super Rainbow - Windshield Smasher

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, July 2012

The heat index for July was turned up to the max as sweltering sun rays and sizzling mp3s beamed down in waves. Avoiding the sun's onslaught was no easy task, but relaxing in the shade with this month's musical offerings served as a pleasant cool down.
Seattle prog-rockers Minus the Bear are back in the fold with their new album Infinity Overhead on its way August 28th. The first track delivered to the public is "Lonely Gun", a guitar-effects laden tune which frontman Jake Snider describes as a song about a loveless relationship. The band kicks off their national tour in support of the new album on August 9th.
The summer has been filled with great alternative rock cuts, and this month Dinosaur Jr. handed us another gem. The Massachusettes rockers debuted the fresh single off I Bet On Sky (September 18th) to the alt-radio waves called "Watch the Corners", a song that highlights all the crunchy rock qualities that the band is known for. Look for them at the MidPoint and Pygmalion Music Festivals in the weeks to come.
Hailing from San Diego, garage-poppers The Soft Pack sound like they could fit wonderfully on a tri-bill with Cloud Nothings and the Japandroids. Their new record Strapped is available August 25th and they gave us a sample in the way of "Saratoga." This tune is a vintage garage rambler sprinkled with some pop flair, sure to sound good with the sunroof down.
Surviving the heatwave is always an adventure, but luckily with the heat also comes some of the year's best music. The July Playlist is chalked full of hot tracks, which mixes perfectly next to a pool and an ice cold cocktail.

July 2012 Playlist

1. Bear Hands - What I've Learned

2. Brothertiger - I've Been Waiting

3. Minus the Bear - Lonely Gun

4. Wolf & Cub - See The Light

8. The Soft Pack - Saratoga

9. Hollow & Akimbo - Singularity

10. Jukebox the Ghost - Somebody

11. The Antlers - Drift Drive

12. Northeast Party House - Pascal Cavalier

IN THE BONUS:

In celebration of the one year anniversary of Feerock's World, and because of the influx of great tunes that were delivered this month, some bonus tracks have been added! A couple of dynamite collaborations headline the extra cuts. First up are The Flaming Lips and Jim James with the song "That Ain't My Trip" off of the Lips' Heady Fwends. Trippy for sure, I'd say. Another newly formed alliance comes in the form of Tyler, the Creator and chillwave mastermind Toro Y Moi. Their joint effort "Hey You" makes for one of the summer's finest anthems.

13. The Flaming Lips & Jim James - That Ain't My Trip

14. Chelsea Light Moving - Frank O'Hara Hit

15. Tyler, the Creator & Toro Y Moi - Hey You

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, June 2012

According to Stephen Hawking, time travel is something of a possibility. If someone were to take a glance at the top of this month's Playlist, they might think they were in a time portal back to 1995. June treated us with mysterious happenings and Venus making a transit across the sun, which begs the question "was there something in the stars?"
Two alternative rock heavyweights grace the top 2 spots on June's Playlist, much to our approval. The Offspring kick things off with their radio friendly "Days Go By", the first single off their new album of the same name. Not to be outdone by fellow 90's rock superstars, Billy Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkins are back in the mainstream with an impressive new record of their own Oceania. As Corgan sings on "Inkless", 'the stars are out tonight.'
Perhaps there isn't a more gorgeous and energetic frontwoman in music today than Grace Potter. Her rock outfit Grace Potter & The Nocturnals are fresh off the release of The Lion The Beast The Beat, a pop heavy collection of radio candy. They will be making festival stops this summer at RBC Bluesfest, Summerfest, and moe.down, so be sure to try and check them out.
Brooklyn's Yeasayer could almost be described as "music from the future." The indie trio unveiled the first track off their upcoming album Fragrant World (August 20) called "Henreitta" earlier this month. With a jumpy beat and a synth friendly backbone, this one is sure to get multiple plays all summer long.
It's always nice to get a healthy mix of old and new artists for the Playlist. Safe to say June lived up to our standards. With plenty of alternative rock and chillwave this mix weaves in and out of the eardrums perfectly on the warm summer nights, which would leave time-traveling hero Marty McFly saying "Whoa, this is heavy."

June 2012 Playlist

1. The Offspring - Days Go By

2. The Smashing Pumpkins - Inkless

3. Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Never Go Back

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, May 2012

Although the summer isn't technically here yet, it sure does feel like it. This May treated us to sunshine, a fresh bloom of wildlife, and signs of new things to come. The same can be said about the musical offerings, which features an array of new sun-baked treasures.
Canada is definitely not short on relevant music these days. Toronto's Metric exploded back onto the alt-radio waves this month with "Youth Without Youth", a glam-rocker that finds front-woman Emily Haines describing a new generation of youngsters who are neglecting their childhood innocence. As the summer nears, this message seems to be very much appropriate. Their new album Synthetica is available for download June 12.
It's always refreshing to hear music with meaning, and this month The Gaslight Anthem delivered. The New Jersey-based punkers handed us an early summer anthem in "45", a track off their upcoming Handwritten (July 24) which features a soaring guitar riff and powerful vocals about moving on from a past relationship.
Michael Angelekos, lead singer of electro-pop outfit Passion Pit, claims that there is more of a dichotomy between the lyrics and the music on the band's new album Gossamer (July 24). The first single "Take A Walk" is a departure from the group relying on their trademark synth grooves and gives way to Angelekos exploring themes of political nature, something we haven't seen from them before.
As the weather continues to become more enjoyable, the new music seems to as well. We here will throw our sunglasses on, grab our mp3 players, and head to the beach to soak up the rays, and of course the fresh tunes.

May 2012 Playlist

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, April 2012

April showers bring May flowers, and apparently they bring revitalizing mp3s as well.  Although the rain may not have drenched us, the barrage of quality music cuts poured in from all corners of the musical landscape.
It is safe to say the Red Hot Chili Peppers are poised to rock out the summer festival circuit, making headlining stops at Hangout, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza. Their latest single "Look Around", a bass-induced romp, has hit alternative radio stations and finds them at the roots of their sound.
Perhaps nobody made a bigger splash through the April puddles than Of Monsters and Men. The Iceland indie-folkers brought their hit song "Little Talks" over the pond much to our approval. This tune is a swashbuckler of a good time and sure to get multiple spins.
Whoever said rock-and-roll is dead has obviously not listened to Alabama Shakes new album Boys & Girls. A refreshing collection of songs from front to back, which features the bluesy pop nugget "Hold On" as the opener and centerpiece.
As always, we here at FW were thrilled with what came in the inbox this month and we will soak them up one more time as the new batch of songs gets ready to bloom.

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, March 2012

In like a lion, out like a lamb. The month of March treated us to a pot of gold filled with quality music spanning from rock to hip-hop, and much more. Sliding down the rainbow first were the Arctic Monkeys who debuted their new video for "R U Mine?", a gritty-guitar cut off their 2011 release Suck It And See. Following suit in releasing new videos, Wisconsin indie-folkers Bon Iver unveiled their video for "Towers", successfully blending blissful sound with sight.
The leprechauns handed out one more gem before the month closed the door. Musical/Visual project Gorillaz delivered their new dance-infused single "Do Ya Thing" which features the likes of James Murphy and Andre 3000. This track will sure to have you bobbing your head, spin after spin.
We were pleased with all the tunes that came in this month which made for great listening. This is our deepest list yet, and we will enjoy them one more time as our whiskey glasses give one last clank.

Monthly Mix: The Playlist, February 2012

The month of February is often associated with themes of romance and icy weather, and this year was no different. Much to our approval, Cupid was shooting his arrows in the form of hot mp3s all month long. We were the benefactors of smooth piano-pop and danceable indie grooves to keep our eardrums thumping right along. It started out with Belgian-Australian musician Gotye making his American debut with the earthly-pop sounding "Somebody That I Used To Know", a track which has already found its way onto alternative radio. It was also a pleasant surprise to see Jack White return with some fresh music off his upcoming solo album Blunderbuss. His tune "Love Interruption" is a fresh piano pop nugget where he bellows out lyrics that seem to explore desires on how to control love, something no one has yet to figure out. And last, but certainly not least, indie-rockers Dr. Dog returned with their new record Be The Void. The first single "These Days" is a peppy dance number that finds the band flexing their impressive pop muscles. As the music world continues to spin, we were thankful February decided to share the love.
